A wonderfully atmospheric piece of Victorian English pottery, this antique Washington Vase transferware plate was produced by Podmore, Walker & Co. of Staffordshire, England, circa 1849–1856.
Its romantic central scene depicts an elaborate classical garden with ornamental urns, graceful palm trees, distant architecture, and a tranquil waterside landscape. An exceptionally ornate border of scrolling flourishes, floral motifs, and decorative cartouches surrounds the scene in rich, dark transfer printing.
Crafted in pearl stoneware, the plate bears the historic Washington Vase maker’s mark on the reverse.
With its dramatic decoration and unmistakably Victorian character, this piece is equally lovely displayed on an antique plate stand, incorporated into a gallery wall, or layered among old books and collected curiosities.
